The Australian Literature Resource

|
The University of Queensland takes special responsibility for recording this field of Australian literature. |
In 2003 AustLit, with Australian Research Council (ARC) assistance, funded a special research project to map the history, span, editorship and content of around 100 twentieth century Australian magazines. Under the leadership of Professor David Carter and Kerry Kilner and through the persistent research of Dr Roger Osborne, a fascinating picture is emerging of the activities and achievements, the highs and lows, the relationships and fallings-out of some of Australia's most interesting agents for change in the growth and recognition of Australia's literary and artistic culture as manifested in the magazines.
From well-known magazines such as Meanjin, Southerly and Westerly to those particularly important but very minor endeavours such as The Austrovert, Birth, and Book Lover, it is now possible to read bio-historical entries on the history and progress of each journal. See for example the entry on a UQ Arts Faculty stalwart, Hecate, or read about the editor of the short lived but exquisite literary and arts magazine Manuscripts, Harry Tatlock Miller.
You can search for other fine examples of Roger's research by going to the AustLit search page to search on your favoured magazine title to discover what information is available so far. Remember to define the work type as 'Periodical' or 'Newspaper' (as applicable) in the scroll box; otherwise all of the individual issues of the periodical or newspaper will be returned as well.
AustLit gratefully acknowledges the financial support of the ARC Linkage Infrastructure Equipment and Facilities scheme which largely funded this project.
