AbstractHistoryArchive Description

La Fiamma is a daily Italian language newspaper. It began in Sydney in 1947. 'Being the only source of news for an entire generation of Italo-Australians for many years, La Fiamma, today remains at the heart of the Italian community in NSW, ACT and QUEENSLAND.' (From the newspaper's webpage)

The creation of La Fiamma has been attributed to the Cappuccini friars of Sydney who edited and published the newspaper. Francesco Ricatti has argued, however, that Guiseppe La Rosa, an Italian priest, suggested the idea and the characteristics of the paper, which was designed in reaction to the socialist newspaper Il Risveglio [see Embodying Migrants, p. 34, n. 18]

Notes

  • In the 1950s and 1960s La Fiamma ran three columns edited and written by Lena Gustin: 'Inchiostro simpatico' (1957-1964), 'Il salotto di Lena' (1957-1961) and 'Di tutto un po'' (1959-1961). The first of these published edited versions of letters from readers along with the author's response and reflections, as well as information relating to charitable activities and initiatives for Italian migrants. The second column invited readers to submit true stories which would be selected and edited for publication. Francesco Ricatti argues that these stories were often rewritten by Gustin to such an exent that they predominantly reflect her Catholic and conservative ideology.
