AbstractHistoryArchive Description

A collection of thematically related short stories, loosely associated with the life of the Rudd family.

Notes

  • Dedication: To the Memory of the Good Old Times! To the memory of the old bush days, when we crossed the rolling plains in the dragging, creaking dray ; To the memory of the old homestead where the great trees towered and the long grass reached above our heads - the homestead where the rafters shook to gay bush songs, and we danced and danced the whole night through - the homestead where we toiled and struggled, and hoped and lost - the homestead where our hearts beat free, and merriment mocked at adversity ; and to you old friends! You who shared with me the shade of the apple trees on the plains - who shared with me those careless days by mountain, creek and scrub, I fondly dedicate this book. - Steele Rudd, Brisbane, Oct. 8, 1904.
  • Most of the chapters of Sandy's Selection (the book) initially appeared as individual stories in Steele Rudd's Magazine in 1903-1904. However some of the stories initially appeared in The North Queensland Register (Chapter I), The Commonwealth Annual (Chapters II - VI) The Queenslander (Chapter XI) and The Bulletin (Chapters XII, XIII, portions of XV, XVII). Chapter XVIII ('Dad Takes to Politics') and Chapter XIX ('Dad in Parliament') were later used as the opening three chapters for Dad in Politics (1908). Notably, for the book, alterations were made to the order in which the stories appeared, some of the stories were divided into two chapters or even amalgamated into one chapter, some story titles were added or altered, and a number of minor changes were made to the text. So there is not always a straightforward match up between the stories as they first appeared in Steele Rudd's Magazine and the later book chapters.

  • Note that whilst Sandy's Selection (the book) was illustrated by a number of artists (principally Lionel Lindsay), the stories that appeared in Steele Rudd's Magazine were illustrated by E. Ashton Murphy, with the exception of the two Dad in Politics stories, which were illustrated by George Taylor.
