The first draft of Joseph Furphy: The Legend of a Man and His Book was awarded the 1939 Prior Memorial Prize. The prize of £100 was shared by Kate Baker and Miles Franklin. Following this win, the contents of the manuscript were 'checked biographically by examination of further material and after discussion with members of the Furphy family and Joseph Furphy's surviving acquaintances'. Prior to publication, there was 'some literary rearrangement'. (p. viii)

Review of Miles Franklin's "Joseph Furphy"
1945
single work
review
— Appears in: Meanjin Papers , Spring vol. 4 no. 3 1945; (p. 225-229) This review of Miles Franklin's biography of Joseph Furphy is most interesting for its analysis of Such is Life. Hope declares that Furphy's narrative style presents a theory of the novel.
