English translation of the title: Treatise on Longing

English translation of first line: Longing

The poem is about a feeling called 'tęsknota', which translates roughly as longing for home or for a beloved person, or as nostalgia. 'Tęsknota' is a significant cultural concept strongly present in Polish Romantic poetry written by exiles like Adam Mickiewicz, to whom Chciuk alludes here. See Eva Hoffman Lost in Translation: Life in a New Language (1989, p. 4) and Anna Wierzbicka Semantics, Culture, and Cognition: Universal Human Concepts in Culture-Specific Configurations (1992, pp. 121-125) for discussions of 'tęsknota'.
