The December 1931 issue of The Home includes 'As Others See Us' (by W. B.), a brief section which notes that 'A. P. Herbert's novel, The Water Gypsies, is being made into a picture. One wonders if Herbert's impressions of Australia which appear in this book find expression in the film. The hero of the book, Mr Bryan, comes out to Sydney and "he liked the Australians at once for their friendliness and gaiety and happy innocence of aristocracy...Bryan was an artist and "in that continent he had yielded a little to the influence of a native artist, Mr Norman Lindsay [q.v.], who had discovered a new use for the firmament in art, and filled it with coveys of naked women.'
