19th-Century Australian Travel Writing
John Henderson Esquire (1819-1894), was a Lieutenant in her Majesty's Ceylon Rifle Regiment. His two-volume travel narrative, Excursions and Adventures in New South Wales, began with the statement that a distinct account of the experiences of a settler would enable the intending emigrant to estimate the discomforts, annoyances and dangers to which the settler was exposed, but also what they had to look forward to. Henderson warned: "let no one who can live at home be too eager to seek his fortune in a distant land." This emigrant guide described the climate, the irritation of insects, the beauty of landscape, costs of goods and labour, and other information useful to those intending to travel to Australia.
