The Australian Woman's Mirror gives the following description of this novel:
'This unusual story tells of the dilemma which faces an Australian girl in England through the provisions of her grandfather's will. The rugged old man, detesting the ways of the modern girl and the code of the Bohemian set in which Aileen is a queen, makes it a condition of her inheritance that she marry and have a child. Until she fulfils the condition she is left to her own resources - a pretence of Art. Aileen's native stubbornness makes her decide to meet the old man on his own ground - give trick for trick. She adopts a child and invents a husband - and then troubles begin.
The illustrations for "The Indispensable Husband" were done by the talented young Australian artist Margaret Horder - her last pictorial work before leaving for America and Europe.'
