AbstractHistoryArchive Description

Humorous poem critical of proposals to relocate the Moreton Bay port and settlement to Cleveland, on the shores of Moreton Bay.

Notes

  • Epigraph: 'Very like a whale' - Shakespeare.
  • Editor's note: 'The following verses have been sent to us upon the subject of a whale that came into the bay a short time since, but turned back near Cleveland Point.'
  • This work originally appeared in the Moreton Bay Courier with the author's name given as 'Quiz'. However, in a note which accompanied the poem 'Old Times in Brisbane', which appeared in the Moreton Bay Courier on 30 September, 1848, 'Nemo' stated that they were the author of this work (which they referred to as 'The Cleveland Point Whale'). If 'Nemo's' claims to authorship are correct, presumably they decided to change their writing name.
