AbstractHistoryArchive Description

A squatter knight and capitalist ironmonger, representing conservative and liberal Victorian politics, are the fathers, respectively, of a daughter and son who wish to marry. The gossip of a South Yarra widow complicates their union, however. When the bank forecloses on the squatter's run the manufacturer secretly buys it for his son and the marriage is achieved. Other characters include a bohemian American journalist (who loves an Australian governess), Mrs Grundy, a reformed larrikin, a lawyer and sundry servants. The scenery consisted of Melbourne locales.
