Notes

  • Includes contributions by Australian and non-Australian authors (some in translation).
  • Contains a section 'Original Prose and Verse: Written Exclusively for this Book by Grant Madison Hervey' (40-63). The section is preceded by a page 'Introducing Grant Madison Hervey' which contains quotations from various English and Australian newspapers praising Hervey.

  • From 'Preface': 'So far as I know, an Australian book in praise of Motherhood is not procurable in Australia. What is wrong with our writers and publishers, that they do not bring forward some such national tribute to Motherhood - the living foundation of the race? As a man, I am astounded at their neglect. Therefore ... I have myself decided to produce such a book. To that end, accordingly, I have commissioned Mr. Grant Madison Hervey, a resident of Queensland, and one of our Australian poets, to write a special Australian section for this book. He is the natural successor of Henry Lawson, by virtue of his gifts. And so he has written one special poem, apart from many others, as a direct Lawsonian tribute to Motherhood. Mr Hervey's work has been warmly praised in England and America, and I now have very much pleasure in bringing a special selection of his new and original work, which cannot be found elsewhere, before a discerning and appreciative Australian public' (5).The preface is dated: St. George's Day, 23rd April, 1926.
