Smiler Martin was born at Mainoru in Arnhem Land and worked as a station hand, carpenter and truck driver. Smiler Martin belongs to the Balang/Rembarrnga people and is the brother of Ronnie Martin and is also related to Nellie Camfoo and Dorothy Murray (qq.v.).
