BiographyHistory

In 1853 Syme was first a correspondent for the Diggers' Advocate and the next year was contributing to the Argus. A supporter of the miners' cause, he moved to The Age after political disagreement arose with Argus owner Edward Wilson. Syme became chief editor when a co-operative of compositors and other staff took over the ownership of The Age. He purchased The Age outright at auction in 1856 operating as sole proprieter and then in partnership with his brother David until his early death from consumption in 1860.
