BiographyHistory

Stephen Darwen was the grandson of William Henry Darwen (q.v.) who founded The Bowen Independent, and the son of Henry Darwen (q.v.) who managed and edited the paper from 1950. In 1974 he undertook a four-year apprenticeship at the Independent in the letterpress machining trade and subsequently worked in the commercial printing and press departments of the newspaper. From 1990 he took over as manager of the printing department from his cousin, Neil Carvolth (q.v.), and in 1991 was appointed assistant manager. From 1996 Darwen served as manager of the Independent.
