Johnson's parents migrated to New Zealand in 1870. He trained at the Dunedin Teachers' training College and graduated M.A. from Otago University in 1891. Johnson was appointed foundation Principal of the Teachers' Training College Hobart in 1906, a post he held until his retirement in 1931.He was a popular and committed teacher of literature, particularly poetry, and co-edited Prose and Verse: Selections from English Literature, 1790-1850 (Hobart, 1921).His students included the later Prime Mini....
