BiographyHistory

Julien de Sanary was exiled to New Caledonia after the Paris Commune Insurrection of 1871. It was there that he met Wolla Meranda (q.v.), and in 1920 he arrived in Australia after she had successfully campaigned for his release. With his health failing, he encouraged her to write and publish her first book, Pavots de la Nuit in France. He continued to write his poetry and she gathered his work together after his death, editing and publishing Poésies de Julien de Sanary (1931).
