BiographyHistory

On his arrival in Australia, Alfred Henry Massina sought his fortune unsuccessfully on the Victorian goldfields. He then worked for the painter W. H. Williams before returning to his first trade, printing. In 1859 he helped form the printing and publishing company Clarson, Shallard & Co, which became Clarson, Massina & Co. in 1868 and later, in 1876, became A. H. Massina & Co. The house of Massina published the prestigious and influential Australian Journal which provided a vehicle for many famous names in Australian colonial literature - Marcus Clarke and Adam Lindsay Gordon among them.
