BiographyHistory

Musician and musical librarian to George IV. After his emigration to Australia, he composed several odes for public events (eg. 'Leichhardt's Grave'), operas and other musical pieces. Nathan became the first Australian tram accident victim in Sydney.

In May 1841, Nathan published Nathan's Hebrew Melodies. His advertisement for this volume states that each poem was 'written expressly for the work by the late Lord Byron'. All poems had been 'newly arranged, harmonized, and revised, interspersed with original anecdote, critical remarks, and conversations of the noble poet' (Sydney Monitor and Commercial Advertiser, 16.1907 (12 May 1841): 1).
