A truncated and unformatted biographical extract follows: Gillian Cowlishaw studied anthropology at Sydney University and has taught at Charles Sturt University, the Australian National University and the University of Sydney. She has held an ARC Professorial Fellowship at UTS. Cowlishaw's ethnographic and historical accounts of the dynamics of race in Australia are based on extended fieldwork in southern Arnhem Land, in Bourke, New South Wales and in western Sydney.
