Hilda was the daughter of John Roach, a miller at Burra Mill, Aberdeen and his (second?) wife Jane (Silver). She was the older sister of Eva M. Roach (q.v.). John Roach worked in his father's mill. After his father's death in 1888 John and his brother Henry maintained the mill for a while, but when they eventually had to close it John and his family moved to the city, apparently some time after 1887. The youngest girl, Vera Gray, was born at Glenelg in 1889, and the family later lived at 'Widcom....
