Arch. Murray was an actor and dramatist, active in Scottish and Australian journalism, most notably Sydney Punch. He acted in Hobart in 1853 and wrote or adapted five dramas, a pantomime, and two burlesques while in Sydney between 1860 and 1882. He pioneered the introduction of colonial incidents and types into sensation drama. His bushranger drama Fleeced (1870), with bushfires and multiple battles, was accused of promoting subversive sympathies when it was revived in Melbourne in November 1878, a few days after the Kelly gang killed three policemen.
