Robert Kaleski was a dog owner and enthusiast from an early age, and during his life became an expert on Australian dogs and the dingo. He took particular interest in the Australian cattle dog, developing, stabilising and drawing up a standard for the breed. Until his death, Kaleski campaigned tirelessly for true recognition of Australian stock dogs - cattle dogs and kelpies.
He contributed articles and short stories on dogs, other animals and rural issues for the Sydney Mail, the Sydney Morning Herald, the Bulletin and the Bookfellow. He published some of these articles and stories in a book Australian Barkers and Biters (1914). Other publications include The Australian Settler's Complete Guide : Scientific and Practical (1909) and Dogs of the World [1947?].
