Arguably one of Australia's most successful actor/directors of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Oscar Asche was born John Stange(r) Heiss Asche at Mack's Hotel, Geelong (Vic) on 24 January 1871. After studying theatre in Norway he established a considerable reputation in England with several theatrical operations, most notably Benson's Shakespeare Company and Sir Herbert Beerbohm-Tree.
