Hugh Stretton graduated from Oxford University where he was a fellow of Balliol College 1948-55, before taking up an appointment as professor of history at the University of Adelaide. He served as deputy chairman of the SA Housing Trust 1973-89. He has been awarded an honorary D. Litt. from the ANU and an honorary LLD from Monash University. His publications include Ideas for Australian Cities (1970), Housing and Government (1974), Capitalism, Socialism and the Environment (1976) which won the Age Book of the Year Award in 1976, and Political Essays (1987), which was the 1987 winner of the Victorian Premier's Literary Award. A collection of essays celebrating Stretton's work, Markets, Morals and Public Policy, edited by Lionel Orchard and Robert Dare, was published in 1989 to mark his retirement.

In 2018, Black Inc. published Hugh Stretton: Selected Writings, edited by Graeme Davison.
