'Gullett was born at Toolamba in northern Victoria and grew up on his parent's farm, contributing articles the Geelong Advertiser from an early age. He became a staff journalist for the Sydney Morning Herald in 1900, before travelling to London as a freelance journalist in 1908. In 1912 he married the daughter of colonial writer Barbara Baynton, and they had two children. He became a war correspondent in 1915, travelling to France, Egypt and Palestine. He was a director of the Australian Immigration Bureau and returned briefly to journalism before joining Federal politics as a Nationalist in 1925. He co-edited Australia in Palestine (1919) with Charles Barrett, and wrote volume VII of The Official History of Australia in the War of 1914-1918 (1923) as well as two short stories.
