Kinmont lived from ages two to eighteen in Port Lincoln, attending Miss Thomas's school, 'Myola'. She often visited her grandparents at Mannum and Gumeracha. Kinmont wanted to be a doctor, but her father insisted that nursing would be more approriate, and she trained at the Children's Hospital, North Adelaide, working there until his death in 1927. After this time she ran the family estate, which consisted of farmland near Port Lincoln.
In 1951 she published her biography of her grandfather, William Richard Randell, the first steam-boat navigator of the River Murray and its tributaries.
