BiographyHistory

In November 1849, John William Vance wrote that the 'number of my days spent in this world mount to twenty five years', thus indicating that he was born about 1824. Vance's writings detail his travels throughout Ireland (where there is an indication that he owned some land), England and Scotland where his last dated entry is 1854. He must have left for Australia sometime after that as there is mention of a John Vance being granted a publican's licence for the Wolston Hotel in the 1864 Queensland Government Gazette, and he is listed in the Queensland Police Gazette (1882) as a J.P. with a selection near Rosewood.
