BiographyHistory

Arthur Rivers was educated at the Athenee, Brussels, and St. John's College, Oxford. He was Archdeacon of Wide Bay and Burnett around 1896, then Toowoomba in the early 1900s. From 1920 he was Archdeacon of Hobart. Rivers was the older brother of famed 19th-century artist and curator Richard Godfrey Rivers. He wrote a series of Sunday school lessons and readers (1911-1916) and Our Inheritance : A Sketch of the Church of England in Australia (1927), as well as editing Sunday School Hymns (date unknown). He also wrote a number of lyrics and music, including Nine Christmas Carols (1904) which was reprinted many times during the following 30 years.
