McCutchan was a prolific British author of crime novels. He published over 80 books, under his own name and a number of pseudonyms, including R. C. Galway. Some of the books have Australian settings.
He joined the Royal Navy as a signalman in 1939, and transferred to the Seaman branch on being recommended for a commission. Throughout the Second World War he served in various battleships, ending the war as Lieutenant RNVR. Afterwards he sailed on the Australian-run Orient liners for three years. McCutchan's books reflect his interest in the sea and in British naval and military history.
