BiographyHistory

During World War I, Thirkell served in the Australian Light Horse Brigade Field Ambulance Corps. In 1918 he received a Meritorious Service Medal for looking after soldiers who had contracted typhoid fever. Following World War I he settled at Cowra, in central western New South Wales. He also served in the Australian army in World War II. In later life Thirkell became a keen amateur entomologist and collector. The moth ionthas thirkelli is named after him.
