Born in England, and educated at Cambridge University, he initially came to Australia to take up an appointment as a school teacher, but returned to England on a number of occasions, before finally settling in Australia in 1923. He enjoyed considerable success as a watercolour artist and illustrator, and became well known through his critical articles, which appeared in The Argus and The Herald (where he was art critic from 1929 to 1934).
