BiographyHistory

Tom Austen 'spent many years reporting or editing foreign news. He worked on the foreign desk of The Age and later was Tokyo correspondent for The Herald newspaper group.' He was also a long-term contributor to The West Australian.

Austen's 'concern with overseas events and their effects on Australia led him to a special interest in migration. It was this interest, and a concern for social history, that brought to his notice the migrants who play such important roles in The Entombed Miner' (1986).
