Such is Life : The Title and the Structure of the Book,
single work
criticism
Mitchell's is probably the most significant essay on Such is Life written before the 1950s. Mitchell argues that the structure of the novel reflects the randomness of life in a rejection of the formal qualities of the conventional novel. Collins' misinterpretations are played against the reader's growing knowledge of events. The humour of this conflict is the result of Furphy's successful construction of events and narration with a consideration of the reader's ability to connect the apparently formless narrative.
- Marcus Clarke and His Critics, single work criticism (p. 167-169)
- Henry Handel Richardson : (I) The Writer, single work criticism (p. 170-180)
