Author's General Preface: ....The books of the present volume were written between 1909 and 1913, and were published during that period and shortly afterwards....I shall be satisifed if it is allowed that, in the different books reverted to above, I have looked from different points of view at 'this vital flesh'; and more so if it is conceded that each book is a unity in itself... The present edition is printed with identical pagination and actually from the type of the limited edition of 1939, which has been kept standing for that purpose for twenty-two years...P. R. S.
