In this autobiographical novella, the narrator, a divorced Chinese woman in Australia, tells how she encounters a married Australian man of Chinese and Russian origin and later becomes his mistress. The romance, however, ends in despair with the man being forced to return to his family and the narrator pining constantly for her lover.
