'Hunter Carlyon began as a black baby and was turned into a white boy before turning back into a black youth and finally a white man.

'But now he is a contender in a nationwide competition to design a new flag for the coming republic. In an Australia Day ceremony the Prime Minister is going to anoint him as the man who best understands what Australia has become. And Hunter Carlyon is black again.
