Upon reacquaintance with an old friend from England, Emily dismisses the friend for his changed looks. Over time, she is drawn to him - at the unhappy expense of her other suitors.

  • The editor of the Illustrated Australian Magazine introduces 'Australian Pastorals. No. 5. Hearts and Heads' by saying that it 'consists of a series of six letters'. The editor also states that the letters are 'without doubt the production of a lady'.
