'...we are more disposed to give the little volume a closer scrutiny inasmuch as it claims to be the first anthology of Australian verse published in England. We must admit, however, a certain amount of wonder as to why Mr. Sladen was chosen by the publisher for this task, as we do not consider him, from an Australian point of view, at all qualified for the work.'

— Appears in: The Sydney Mail , 27 August 1887; (p. 444)
'We have been requested to state that Mr Douglas Sladen has been commissioned by Mr Walter Scott to prepare, for his Canterbury Poets series, a volume of extracts from Australian poets. The only limitation is that they must be on Australian subjects. Anyone is eligible for representation, though he may only have written one poem. Those who wish to be represented in the volume should send their poems to Mr Douglas B.W. Sladen, care of Griffith and Farran, St Paul's Churchyard, London, E.C. Contributions should be forwarded at once, as the earlier they are the better chance they will have of finding space. The book will go to press in November. New Zealand and New Zealanders are included.'

Notice of a forthcoming volume of poetry, to be edited by Douglas Sladen [Australian Ballads and Other Poems], and invitation to submit work: 'Contributions are not limited, as they were in his volume for the Canterbury poets [Australian Ballads and Rhymes], exclusively to bush subjects, though poems with a distinctively Australian flavour will have preference...'
