AbstractHistoryArchive Description

'In 1895, with the country in turmoil a young city poet and journalist travels to a remote sheep station to track down a political agitator. When the clashes between union shearers and landowners turn to violence, a man is found dead in a billabong. Was it suicide or murder? A dramatisation of the extraordinary true story of Banjo Paterson and Waltzing Matilda.' (Source: Screen Australia website)

Notes

  • Lucky Country Productions changed the name of the film from Banjo & Matilda to Waltzing Matilda. The information was posted on the production company's website on 4 November 2013:

'We have decided to change the name of BANJO & MATILDA, to WALTZING MATILDA. The film is fundamentally about the writing of that song and deserves to be known as that. We have begun offering the role to leading male actors who we believe can help us drive the movie to an international audience. We fully believe that a film of this scale -with a 12 million dollar budget – requires an A-list marquee name to ‘drive it’ to the market. Bill has just returned from visiting film sales agents in Hollywood, NYC and London in the last month. We have received an overwhelmingly positive response to the concept...'
