Editor's note: The poet Kenneth Slessor (1901-71) was appointed official Australian war correspondent in 1940. He has reported from battlefields in Europe and the Middle East before he arrived in Lae, New Guinea, with Australian forces to catalogue the detritus of the Japanese defeat. The ugliness of abandoned battlefields does little to mute the grim joy of victory.
