Editor's note: Melbourne-born Alan Moorehead (1910-83) was a foreign correspondent with the London Daily Express throughout the Second World War. In the first volume of his masterpiece, African Trilogy, he followed Australian troops as they drove Italian forces from the Libyan cities of Bardia and Tobruk in January 1941. The breadth and detail of Moorehead's work marks him out as one of the greatest Australian journalists.
