Editor's note: Lieutenant William Donovan Joynt, VC (1889-1986) was an officer with the 8th Battalion in April 1918, when the 1st Australian Division advanced towards Hazebrouck in Northern France to beat back a German offensive aimed at capturing the English Channel ports of Calais, Boulogne and Le Havre. A hard man driven by an unrelenting sense of duty, Joynt was Australia's last surviving First World War VC winner before his death at age ninety-seven.
