Editor's note: Author Martin Boyd (1893-1972), whose nephews were the artist Arthur Boyd and the architect Robin Boyd, joined the Royal Flying Corps in England in 1917. He flew reconnaissance on bombing raids over Belgium in early 1918 and went on to remember his comrades with an aching sense of loss.
