Notes

  • Contains section, 'Men of the Month', which comprises brief biographical notes (some with accompanying portraits) of notable individuals from various professions. This issue includes General R. Spencer Browne (aka Reginald Spencer Browne, q.v.).
  • Includes a brief extract from the diary of Captain James Cook (q.v.) 'describing the natives of New Holland'. E. J. Francis determines that the passage 'not only contains some fine, rough English, but also seems' to be 'a fair description of the natives of Australia in 1932.' (content appears in the monthly column, 'The Bibful', by E. J. Francis)
  • Contains a brief reference to Eric [sic] Remarque (aka Erich Maria Remarque, q.v.), noting that the German author of All Quiet on the Western Front, 'lives in Switzerland. At Berlin the Customs officials have taken possession of his bank account. The reason being that Remarque is supposed to have smuggled over to Switzerland the proceeds of his famous book which has brought him a profit of £25,000.' (content appears in topical column, 'This, That and Them', by London correspondent T. H. Cochran)
