This work appears to have remained unpubished until its inclusion in Reed (1966). Reed's source was the undated MS, then held in a private collection.

This poem was probably written following the death of Thomas Freeman, a lieutenant in the Volunteers, who drowned in a yachting accident at Camp Cove, on Sydney Harbour, on Boxing Day, 1864, whilst competing in a regatta.
