The extended version of this poem, published in the Illawarra Mercury in June 1861, turns the notions of mourning over a father's grave, expounded in the first three stanzas, into a claim that there was shame associated with the father and that he was not well-loved in his lifetime. 'A Fragment' ends with the lines: 'I have tried to be cold, to be calm and forgiving - / But Nature rebels when I turn to the dead, / And remember how deeply you hated him living!'
