Notes

  • This poem initially appeared in the Sydney Morning Herald in January 1862 with the author's name indicated as Basil E. Kendall. It was subsequently published in the Clarence and Richmond Examiner in August 1862, with the author's name indicated as Henry Kendall. This later version omitted one verse from the earlier Sydney Morning Herald version - hence the speculation by Reed (1966) that apart from the omitted verse, the poem was the work of Henry Kendall.
