Deverell of Dandong, S. J. Rrydon , single work short story
Young Deverell considers himself to be the luckiest man in the colony, despite his hidden family shame, for he has a new job as a station manager and is set to marry his sweetheart in a month. Even now, caught with a lame horse out in the bush as the sun is setting, and with no food, he is lucky enough to be joined by a rather distinguished looking tramp who sets to making damper and billy tea to share. Deverell is surprised to learn that the tramp has been looking for him to deliver news of his long-ago imprisoned, but apparently now dead, father. Having spent the evening in amiable conversation, the men retire for the night. The tramp rises early while Deverell sleeps on. Before the tramp departs, he tucks his best blanket closely around Deverell with parental pride and devotion and gazes wistfully upon him before departing with moist eyes.
