The Gipsy Dancer was written when Dorothy Hewett was age eleven. It is unclear when the script was typed but it was performed by Dorothy, her sister and playmates on the wheat and sheep farm at Malyalling near Wikepin in Western Australia. Hewett's poem 'Gipsy Dreams' has been added as a prologue to the play. (pp. lii-liii)
