Steampunk note: The clockwork man of this story is highly typical of steampunk fiction.
The story is set in Tansy Rayner Roberts's work of Mocklore, a high-fantasy world in which magic is unpredictable, and is the middle of three stories all involving Delta Void, a jack-of-all-trades with multiple personas at her beck and call. Rather than being technology, the clockwork man is, as Delta explains,
made of magic. Clockwork is a magic substance that runs rampant in the world areas of these very mountains, People trap it, tame it and make it into amusing objects like fob-watches and argumentative robots. You are entirely made of magic. (p.157)
None of the other Delta Void stories contain steampunk elements.
